During 2006 Naked Army had great pleasure in presenting our BULL sculpture to 2/5 Battalion AIF veteran Ron Mackie of Gulgong NSW.
Ron had been giving Bull Allen covering fire the day he rescued wounded US soldiers under intense Japanese fire at Mt Tambu, New Guinea 1943, for which Bull was awarded the US Silver Star.
Ron was serving a bren gun the at the time the iconic photograph of Bull was taken. “Bull gave us some instructions before the battle. He told us not to shout out if we were wounded, but to raise our hand in the air so he could see us. That way the Jap(anese) wouldn’t hear us.”
Naked Army also had the opportunity to record Ron’s wartime experiences, which will be included with this story shortly.
